Missing sugars in our diet can heal us

Donovan W. Christie MD, MS, CPE
Medical Director, ANWAN Wellness LLC.

When most people think about essential sugars they think about table sugar, sucrose which is made up of many glucose monosaccharides in a chain. Another abundant sugar in our diet is galactose which is found in milk and dairy foods. But did you know that there are 6 other essential sugars that we are not eating everyday.

All 8 of these sugars known as glyconutrients are responsible for cell to cell communication in our bodies. Without them all type of disease occurs because our cells lack the ability to recognize our own cells. Poor communication between cells occurs because these sugars are missing on the surface of our cells. Every body processes that protect and heal us involve cell to cell transmissions. These coded messages control everything from wound healing to cancer cell destruction.

What are the other six other glyconutrients necessary for life? Fucose is bound in breast milk and mushrooms. Mannose is found in the aloe vera plant. Xylose is found in certain sugarless gums and candies. N-acetyl-neuraminic acid is found in breast milk. N-acetyl-glucosamine is important for cartilage repair and N-acetyl-galactosamine is important in inhibiting tumor growth.

How do these sugars affect cell to cell communication? Every cell in our bodies is covered by tiny hair-like projections. It was not until the invention of the electron microscope that these projections were identified. Well, the hairs were identified as protein molecules with sugar molecules arranged in a prescribed fashion on the surface. These sugar molecules form the words that cells use to communicate with each other. When two cells touch, the sugar molecules on each cell actually speak to each other through an intricate sugar code. If the body is lacking any of these sugars the message delivered will be corrupted and could lead to disease.

Corrupted or malformed glyconutrients are known to be characteristic of many diseases, such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, Diabetes, and all autoimmune diseases. If our immune cells falsely recognize our joint cartilage cells as foreign to our bodies then the immune cells will facilitate a cascade reaction to get rid of our own cartilage cells. This phenomenon in Rheumatoid Arthritis causes a deformed joint space, with swelling and fluid accumulating in the joint. In type 1 Diabetes it results in destruction of the pancreas and loss of our ability to make insulin. In type 11 Diabetes it results in destruction or down-regulation of the insulin receptor on cell surface preventing binding of glucose in the serum and high blood sugar. Lupus is another great example because of its ability to affect every organ in the body. Patients with the Lupus presents with a rash, lung, heart, kidney and liver abnormalities. Antibodies can be found to all our tissues from these diseases. What are we to do about these chronic conditions brought about by our depleted food supply?

People who take glyconutrients report feeling better with less fatigue, less stiffness, joint pain, headache and a sense of improve vitality and vigor. The best natural sources of glyconutrients have been used for centuries as healing medicinal compounds.
Glyconutrients can be found in Breast Milk (Fucose, galactose, N-acetylnueraminic acid, and N-acetylglucosamine), Aloe Vera (Mannose), Saps and gums of trees and plants from a variety of vegetables and fruits such as tomatoes, corn, carrots, coconuts and Echinacea( arabinose, galactose, rhamnose and glucuronic acid) and Pectin fiber from fruits like apples and vegetable such as pumpkins.
